Chinese American historian Him Mark Lai (1925-2009) was deeply interested in Chinese American political organizations. One of his last published works was a foreword for a recently published book by Gao Weinong of Jinan University on the Baohuanghui in the United States. In this essay, Lai explains why the reform organization had such appeal for Chinese in America and describes its position vis a vis the revolutionaries led by Sun Yat-sen. He also reveals the reform organization's continuing activities in the U.S. until after World War II, a little-known historical byway.
Many of us are indebted to Him Mark Lai for sharing his wisdom and treasure chest of knowledge with us. In emulation of Him Mark's willingness to share scholarship freely, this blog is dedicated to his memory.
