Selected Bibliography and Archival Collections on Kang in Exile and the Baohuanghui

  • Historical Chinese Language Materials in British Columbia:  An Electronic Inventory of the University of British Columbia Library includes miscellaneous materials dating from 1899 to at least 1927.  Includes constitutions, newspapers, songs, notices, menus, business documents (Zhenhua Gongsi, Hong Kong Shangwu Gongsi), articles by and about Kang and Liang, photos of Baohuanghui members including Li Fuji, Ye En, Ye Chuntian, Chen Mingpu, members of the Chinese Empire Ladies Reform Association, Liang Qichao.  Some images online.
  • Also at the University of British Columbia Library is the Collection of Won Alexander Cumyow (Wen Jinyou 溫金友), first Chinese Canadian born in Canada (1861-1955) and founder and secretary of  Baohuanghui in Vancouver/Victoria.  Includes Baohuanghui correspondence, photos (executive officers, building),  petitions, newspaper articles, early 1900s.  
  • Jung-pang Lo Collection, Special Collections, University of California at Davis Library. Lo was the son of Kang Tongbi and Luo Chang; collection includes Kang materials passed to Lo by his mother for Lo's definitive biography of Kang.
  • Not digitized but of great use to scholars are the Chinese Empire Reform Association Documents, 1899-1948, University of California at Berkeley, Ethnic Studies Library 73 bound portfolios in four cartons: Kang's speeches and writings; bylaws; business records; memorials to Qing; Wu Xianzi handwritten history and principles of Xianzhenghui (1906); Wu, Meiguo Youji  伍庄:《美国游记》[Wu Zhuang:  American travel notes]; Huamo Bank stock (1907); Liang Chaojie, "Zhenhua Gongsi zai Meizhou Tougu Shimo Zhenxiang":《振华公司在美州招股始末真相》 [The whole story and true facts of raising stock shares in America for Zhenhua Company]; Zhongguo Weixin Bao 《中国维新报》;  Tan Zhangxiao's "Zhengxinlu" regarding Qiongcailou scandal (1909); records of the newspaper Shijie Ribao [Chinese World] from 1909 to 1969, including correspondence, business papers, stock certificates, bylaws, photographs and manuscripts; history of military schools.
